TROPICAL FRUIT World staff have been busy welcoming hundreds of visitors from across Asia this week celebrating Chinese New Year.
The Weekly visited the iconic Tweed tourism destination on Duranbah Road on Monday, February 19, to meet some of the visitors and to find out more about the event.
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar.
Celebrations traditionally run from the night before the first day of the new year, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month.
The first day of the new year falls on the new moon between January 21 and February 20 and in 2018, the first day of the Lunar New Year was on Friday, February 16, starting the year of the dog.
Fruit also symbolises new life and prosperity for our Asian visitors and where better to sample some of the best range than Tropical Fruit World.
Tropical Fruit World Sales Manager Kelly Patterson said they were welcoming an influx of international visitors, who are travelling here over the new year holiday period.
“We’ve had guests from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea as well as visitors from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, are celebrating with us too,” she said.
“Also known as ‘Spring Festival’ the New Year celebrates a healthy, prosperous and bountiful year ahead.
“Brightly coloured fruits like citrus and pineapples are symbols of bountiful good fortune and visitors enjoy the healthy, delicious (Autumn) harvest of fruits at Tropical Fruit World.”
Mrs Patterson said visitors are enjoying the cultural experience of a behind-the-scenes tour of an Australian working farm.
“For the week of celebrations we welcome guests to our Fruit Market with bright red lanterns and lots of brightly coloured fruits, of course,” she said.
This year is the Year of the Dog, in the Chinese Zodiac, and people born under this sign are believed to be loyal, reliable and honest.
