THE MURWILLUMBAH Art Trail 2018 (MAT18) will take place in May this year and The Weekly is proud to announce it has stepped up as a gold sponsor for the event.

As part of the sponsorship, The Weekly will feature the talents and passions of a different artist each week in the Entertainment section, one that’s both local to the Northern Rivers and will also be on display during MAT18.

This year is expected to be one of the largest trails for the already iconic event, which last year attracted thousands of locals and visitors to admire our talented local artists.

The Weekly office on Queen Street will also take part with a photographic exhibition on site to this year’s the theme “Moving On”.

Fashion designer Maya Krasna is the first featured artist, who spoke to The Weekly about her passion for creating unique pieces.

Maya moved to Tweed Shire nine years ago and considers this region one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

“I am originally from Slovakia where I studied fashion design and visual arts,” she said.

“Both visual arts and fashion have influenced my artistic expression over the years.

“To me fashion is wearable art. We change our clothes more often than we change paintings in our living room.

“Fashion allows me to practically realise my artistic expression by designing for everyday use and special occasions.”

Maya said he main passion is to create clothes which give us a sense of ceremony, “the ceremony of every day life” as she calls it.

“By this I mean being more deeply aware of ourselves and of the world around us,” she said.

“Of course, I want everyone to feel great in my clothes; I use mostly natural, soft free flowing materials.

“I believe it’s better to own less and find something to wear that we feel helps us to express our personal philosophy.

“I also believe in fair trade and buying locally made clothes as much as possible. All my clothes are designed and handmade in my studio in Uki.”

Maya will be presenting her range during a fashion parade for MAT18, which will be part of the opening night on Friday, May 18.

“I’m also helping other local designers to promote their work and I believe it’s going be a fabulous fashion show,” she said.

“I’m very excited about presenting more local fashion and for the past two years I have coordinated the fashion show for “Images of Uki”, an annual exhibition of art and fashion held in September.

“My work will also be exhibited at the upcoming Nimbin Fashion Show (September 24).

“The clothes I will present in the show will be ready-to-wear yet with my own flare for the numinous.

“Expect lots of flowing fabric, feathers and a sense of other-worldliness.”
