A TWEED Shire man has died in hospital following a serious assault at Tweed Heads West last week.
Tweed Police said it was about 6pm on Wednesday, May 15, when a group of people were at a unit on Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads West.
“A physical altercation occurred between two men – aged 54 and 47 – who are known to each other,” police said.
“Police will allege the younger man assaulted the older man several times.
“Emergency services attended and the injured man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition; however, he died (Wednesday, May 22, 2019).
“A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
Police said the 47-year-old man, who was arrested at the scene shortly after the alleged assault, was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was granted conditional bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday, May 27.
Detectives from Tweed/Byron Police District, with the assistance of the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, are continuing to investigate the incident under Strike Force Ypres.
“As part of their inquiries, the current charges will be reviewed,” police said.
