MURWILLUMBAH FIRE & Rescue were called to a house fire at Uki Street, Murwillumbah, this morning around 5.09am after the residents were woken up by their smoke alarm.

Firefighters said on arrival they saw smoke billowing from the house with an active fire in a downstairs room.

β€œAll persons were out of the house, but we were notified that the family pet was still inside,” a statement from fire crews said.

β€œFour firefighters using breathing apparatus with hose lines entered the house and attacked the fire while two of the firefighters searched the house for any occupants and the family dog.

β€œIn one of the rooms a small dog “Chewie” was found hiding inΒ the corner in thick smoke.”

Firefighters said they removed the dog from the house and found the dog was struggling to breath.

β€œNSW paramedics treated the dog at the scene with oxygen,” firefighters said.

β€œThe dog made a great recovery.”

The fire was contained to one room of the house and was believed to have started in a freezer in a storage room.

β€œThankfully the house had working smoke alarms which alerted the residents of the fire,” firefighters said.

Residents have extended the appreciation to Murwillumbah Firefighters and Tweed HeadsΒ Firefighters for their assistance again.

Also in attendance wasΒ NSW Ambulance, NSW Police Force and Fire and Rescue NSW.
