Murwillumbah Mustangs have defeated the Cudgen Hornets 16-14 in the NRRRL grand final at Cudgen Leagues Club.

The win was dedicated to the late Grant ‘Cookie’ Cook and his wife Colleen who attended the game.

Despite the weather the crowd swelled to more than 5000 supporters who watched the Mustangs take the win.

The Mustangs had the lead at half time with a score of 14-8. The Hornets staged a comeback in the second half, showing both strength and skill. But the Mustangs were able to hold on to their lead, with Cudgen scoring a late try.

Halfback Wayde Kelly was awarded man of the match.

Cudgen had success in the reserve grade grand final with a 24-18 win against Marist Brothers.

The under 18s Ballina side were too strong for Cudgen, who were defeated 28-20.

Celebrations are expected to go into the night after the tough win.
