A 40-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly punched a bullmastiff puppy at Tweed Heads on Thursday, June 29.

Police said at about 8.45pm they were called to the car park of Tweed Mall, where witnesses reported seeing a male person punching a dog numerous times. The witnesses told Police they had serious concerns for the safety of the animal.

Police said they “immediately noticed the male had blood on his knuckles and that the dog had a laceration and blood around its snout”.

“The male was aggressive with the Police and admitted that he had punched the dog because it had soiled his vehicle,” Police said in a media statement.

“Police seized the bull mastiff pup which is now in the care of the RSPCA. Police will be charging the male with cruelty to animals.”
