AN ACCIDENT involving a truck and a limousine on the M1 at Tweed Heads South this afternoon has caused traffic chaos with the northbound lanes closed for several hours.

At approximately 2.30pm (DST) emergency services were called to the accident in the northbound lane just after the Minjungbal Drive exit.

It is believed the limousine crashed into the back of the truck after failing to stop at a roadworks zone.

The M1 backed up in both directions for several kilometres as well as along Leisure Drive, Kirkwood Drive and Minjungbal Drive as motorists attempted to avoid the area. Motorists reported the trip home taking over an hour.

The M1 is now open to traffic in both directions.
