A 79-YEAR-OLD Banora Point woman is believed to have driven her vehicle off the road and into Terranora Creek near Dry Dock Road, Tweed Heads South this afternoon.
Emergency services are currently at the scene and Tweed Police have set up an investigation area.
Bystanders are crowding the riverbanks with rescue divers anchoring the car 50 metres from where it entered the water off a steep embankment at the corner of Fraser Drive and Dry Dock Road.
The Weekly spoke to a Police Officer at the scene who said the circumstances were not suspicious.
The officer said divers from Queensland Police had been dispatched in order to retrieve the woman’s body.
“The car will then be towed in the water to the dry dock boat launching point,” the officer said.
“If the vehicle is unable to be towed to the dry dock then heavy equipment will be used to retrieve the vehicle.”
It is believed that a man may have attempted to save the woman and witnesses say she may have resisted, although yet this had not been confirmed by Police and the investigation is ongoing.
