A 27-YEAR-OLD Murwillumbah man has been charged with dangerous driving after a hit and run at Tweed Heads South on Sunday, July 8, that left a 59-year-old woman with serious head and leg injuries.
Police are alleging the Murwillumbah man was involved in a street race with two other vehicles when he failed to offer assistance to the woman.
A witness to the hit and run said a white ute, a grey Ford Festiva and a white motorcycle were travelling southbound along Minjungbal Drive at high speed around 8pm.
The ute failed to negotiate a right-hand bend at the Pacific Motorway underpass and struck a woman who was walking on the footpath, then fled the scene.
The woman was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with a fractured ankle and head injuries in a serious but stable condition.
Police said they were able to identify the vehicle involved after receiving information from the public as well as CCTV footage.
A search warrant was executed at a Murwillumbah home where police arrested the 27-year-old Murwillumbah man and seized a white Triton ute, believed to be involved in the crash, as well as several mobile phones.
After speaking to the man, police charged him with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, failing to stop and offer assistance and negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm.
He was granted bail and will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court at a later date.
Police said they are continuing to investigate the incident to identify the other people involved.
