Locals would remember Occupation being filmed in Murwillumbah and surrounds in 2017 and features a dramatic invasion scene which was filmed at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds.
Hundreds of locals took part in the film, which took place over the course of three days with the film trailer released late 2017 (see below).
The film features several key scenes from across the shire including the invasion of earth with scenes reminiscent of Independence Day and battle sequences over the Tweed Valley cane fields.
The special effects and fight sequences are slick with several well-placed explosives at the Showgrounds.
Other local filming locations included the Condong Mill, Sugar Beat Cafe and Taylors Corner.
Occupation stars Temuera Morrison, Bruce Spence, Charles Mesure, Aaron Jeffery, Rhiannon Fish, Jacqueline McKenzie, Stephany Jacobsen and Dan Ewing to name a few.
According to IMDB trivia, actor Temeura made a surprise visit to the extras one night and made a lovely speech before launching into the Hakka.
“After their small Australian country town is annihilated by an overwhelming airborne attack, a group of civilians evade capture and discover they are now among the last remaining survivors of an extraterrestrial invasion engulfing the entire planet,” the film’s synopsis reads.
“As humanity falls under world-wide occupation, they form a home-grown army to fight back against vastly superior enemy forces. On the frontlines of the battle for Earth, they are our last hope.”
