TWEED POLICE have reported a violent encounter with a man who turned aggressive towards staff at The Tweed Hospital staff this morning (Sunday, March 11).

Police said they were forced to taser a 40-year-old man after they were unable to subdue him with pepper spray.

Tweed Police said the man was under police guard at the hospital and was talking to hospital staff before the situation escalated.

“The male was talking to staff in an office when he became agitated and commenced to yell at them,” a police statement reads.

Officers attempted to remove the man from the office but were unable to due to his extremely large build.

“He then turned on police who used OC Spray (Oleoresin Capsicum) to try and contain him,” police said.

“Again, due to his extremely large build this was unsuccessful.”

Police said the man then armed himself with a chair and officers fearing for the safety of all concerned used a taser to subdue the man.

“The Taser had immediate effect and the man was handcuffed,” police said.

The man was charged with resisting police and intimidation of hospital staff and will appear at Tweed Heads Local Court.
