AN ESTIMATED 12 cars have had their tyres slashed on Commercial Road and Condong Street in Murwillumbah overnight (Saturday, December 2), prompting fresh calls for a greater police presence in the valley.
A Murwillumbah resident phoned The Weekly this morning highlighting her anger with the situation and has pleaded with police to investigate the matter.
She estimated about 12 cars were targeted in the slashing spree and many are stranded until they are able to organise towing services or replace their tyres.
The resident said she was unable to use roadside assistance to fix all four brand new tyres, as she was told the matter falls under an insurance claim despite being a member of NRMA.
Christmas lights were also vandalised during the incident with lights cut.
The incident is believed to have started in the early hours of this morning, as one resident said he found his tyres slashed at about 2am.
“Tyres slashed, cars scratched and Christmas lights cut on Commercial Rd. Around 1.30am. Not cool, not cool at all. Very disappointing response from the police station. If anyone who has the slightest gripe about anything can call council and police maybe we’ll get the stats up and finally get a significant presence in this town,” a resident had posted on social media.
A vehicle was also believed to have been broken into on Tumbulgum Road overnight, however it was unknown as to whether the incident was related.
The matter has been raised with the Tweed Police, although one resident told The Weekly she was frustrated that police were not able to attend earlier this morning in order to investigate the matter.
The Weekly has also attempted to contact police, however officers were busy at the time and attempts will continue.
