THE AWARD winning short film ‘In a Cane Field’ that was filmed in the Tweed Valley will be screened in Murwillumbah on March 11 as part of the Flickerfest International Short Film Festival Australian Tour.
The tour will showcase the very Best of Australian Shorts program on March 11 and the Best Short Laughs Comedy program from across the globe on March 12.
‘In a Cane Field’, directed by Emily Avila was filmed in Condong and won Best Cinematography at Flickerfest and Best Short Film during the Byron All Shorts film competition.
The film is based on the short story ‘The Serrambi Case’, a murder mystery by Brazilian writer Frances de Pontes Peebles. In the short film the body of a fifteen-year-old girl is found in a cane field. Her murder is a mystery that envelops the community as those close to the girl grapple with death, in all its senselessness.
Ms Avila told The Weekly that one of the highlights of filming ‘In a Cane Field’ was working with Tweed Valley cane farmers.
“We visited Condong every month for about a year to chose locations and check how the cane was looking,” she said.
“We shot the cane fires in the film documentary style with some the local cane gangs letting us chase them around the fields for a weekend, definitely one of the highlights of the shoot.”
Also screening is the hilarious animation ‘Fish with Legs’, with voices by Frank Woodley and Barry Otto and ‘MESSiAH’, a playful collision of cultures in the Australian wilderness, starring David Gulpilil and written and directed by Damian Walshe-Howling.
On Sunday March 12 the Short Laughs Comedy program will provide an afternoon of laugh out loud comedy from Australia and across the world.
Highlights include the hilarious ‘5 Films About Technology’ that takes a darkly comic look at the absurd realities of how modern technology affects our daily lives, whilst ‘Facon’ from Australia is a funny and quirky insight into our modern diet, and oddball comedy ‘Twinsburg’ (USA) shines the spotlight on a Midwestern town founded by identical brothers where thousands convene for the world’s largest gathering of twins.
Flickerfest Best of Australian Shorts will screen on Saturday, March 11 from 7pm. Short Laughs Comedy will screen on Sunday March 12 from 4pm. Tickets $15, concessions $12.
