A RACE was on to successfully retrieve a sinking 25-tonne excavator out of a creek bed in South Murwillumbah last week.

Tweed Heads Firefighters and Hazmat crews responded to assist several other Murwillumbah-based fire crews with stabilising and eventually retrieving the machine successfully.

Another excavator was used to assist with the machine’s removal.

“A 25 Tonne excavator was stuck in a creek, crews pumped water from around the excavator & laid booms to stop any environmental damage to the creek,” FRNSW 468 said on social media today.

“Another excavator was brought in to assist with the removal. Nobody was injured in the incident.”

It was unknown why the excavator was in the area or whether it collapsed the edge of the river bank.

The successful extraction operation took several hours.
