SINCE WOMEN were first allowed to patrol Australian beaches in the 1980s, the rise of women in the surf has grown to the point that women nearly match the number of male Surf Life Savers.
On Saturday, October 15, the high profile ‘Women in Surf’ luncheon, hosted by Jacki Hendy and featuring former Champion Ironwoman Karla Gilbert aims to celebrate this growth, mixed with good humor, great food and comradery.
“Women have always been involved in surf lifesaving, competing with the men prior to the introduction of women’s events 30 years ago,” said local Ironwoman and elite athlete Karla Gilbert.
“I think this is one of the reasons women’s participation has been seen to grow at such as incredible rate, because, for the most part, we were already there.”
“I’ve grown up with Surf Lifesaving and when I started I was competing against men, but by the time I entered senior ranks the number of women in the sport had grown to be virtually on par with the guys, which is fantastic to see,” Ms Gilbert said.
“This is very important for us to continue to promote so the thousands of young girls coming through the ranks, can see what is possible.”
“The annual Women in Surf luncheon is held to recognize and celebrate women’s contribution to Surf Life Saving,” said President of Palm Beach Nippers Gary Fraser.
“Now in it’s third year we make very sure it is a wonderful social event.
“The beach is a way of life for many Australians, and for those involved with Surf Life Saving, whether at the competition level or simply as a nipper, it offers a chance for confidence building, lasting friendships, safety and wellbeing which isn’t found in most sports.”
Join Women in Surf and other high-profile members of Australia’s iconic movement to say ‘Thank You’ for the dedication, time and energy of women who’ve made all of this possible.
Jacki Hendy will host this event which will feature a host of special guests, including Karla Gilbert.
There will be live entertainment throughout the afternoon along with raffles, prize giveaways and much more.
Bring your friends and enjoy a fun filled afternoon of enjoyment and lots of laughter that helps fundraise for Women in Surf, while celebrating just how far women in surf have come since the 80s.
