AN ELDERLY woman has died while climbing the lower part of Wollumbin Mount Warning this morning (Tuesday, June 25) in the latest shock death on the iconic mountain.
Tweed District Rescue President Drew Carr said the call to the squad for assistance came through at 10.42am.
“We responded to reports of an 80-year-old female about 1.5km up the track,” Mr Carr said.
“She was unconscious.
“The helicopter couldn’t be tasked to the scene because of the rainy conditions.
“Family and bystanders tried to resuscitate the woman, but CPR was unsuccessful.”
Mr Carr said by the time rescue crews arrived on scene the woman was unresponsive and could not be revived.
“She was climbing with family and friends,” Mr Carr said.
“Our crew assisted police with removal of the patient off the mountain.”
Mr Carr said the operation took just over two hours.
“We were driving down Mt Warning Road by 1.30pm,” he said.
“Murwillumbah SES assisted, Tweed Byron Police and paramedics from Murwillumbah, NSW ambulance.”
Mr Carr said: “the crew’s thoughts are with the family in this difficult time”.
Specifics around why the 80-year-old was climbing the difficult mountain, in wet conditions, were unknown at this time.
